Through my experiences with the National Rites of Passage Community, I feel that the most important thing NROPI has to offer is a gateway to being physically, emotionally and spiritually connected to your past, present and future. When we have access to such pathway, it helps you to truly breath to life this knowledge in everything that you do and to really help you understand who you are as a person and as an African American.
Every time I am with the NROPI family, I get a feeling of excitement; especially when I interact with Elders, Adults and students! I feel more and more connected to who I am, deep down to my soul. Its one of the greatest feelings!Maisha Abbott,MAO Organic Farms (KAUHALE), Wai`anae, Hawai`i
In 1994 while serving time in Grafton Correctional Institution I participated in the NROPI rites of passage program. My participation in the process/program was an awakening. The process provided me with a greater sense of self and responsibility for others within and those of my family outside these walls, gates and barbed wire. No Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections program has better prepared me to become a productive member of society than the NROPI rites of passage program. It has made me aware of those who came before, the living and the unborn. NROPI has made all the difference in me and prepared me for being released and being a responsible and productive man.Dwain Farrow,Grafton Correctional Institute – Grafton, Ohio
NROPI is important organization because it has been a wellspring of cultural resources. As a Community Based Organization (CBO) leader it’s vitally crucial to network with luminaries in your field, whom can inspire, inform and influence the work engaged in each day. Additionally, my organization was able to meet, converse and explore social transformative ideas with great minds, foundation leaders and entrepreneurs. Furthermore, NROPI provided some of my senior leadership with eye-opening and rejuvenating experiences which make the organization a cultural gem.Ayize Sabater,Washington, DC
My daughter (Louisa Laws) was one of the first group of rites of passage youth to travel with NROPI on a cultural learning experience (CLX) to Ghana, West Africa. The experience was life changing; since then she has always felt she belong in Africa.
My daughter is presently working with an animal rescue organization in Zambia, Africa. Her area of specialty is big cats. She is living her dream and experiencing all Zambia has to offer. The NROPI Rites of Passage Passages Program in the Cleveland Public Schools left her with a life changing experience and identity. Since her rites of passage and West African experience, sixteen years ago as a fifth grader she has graduated from More college in California and worked with the Santa Fe Zoo. The rites of passage experience provided a sense of Identity (self and group), purpose, direction, belonginess, self worth, respect for self, family, others and nature; It motivated her to obtain good grades and achieve. She is a good and loving person with a bright future.
